Hair Loss In Men

Male pattern baldness is a common type of hair loss that affects most men at some point in their lives. Although it typically takes 15 to 25 years for a man to go bald, some men can experience complete hair loss in less than five years. Men who start losing their hair before the age of 30 tend to go bald more quickly. And while male pattern baldness is difficult to predict, it still follows a pattern.

The male pattern of baldness

Usually the hair begins to recede or thin at the sides. This is generally accompanied by thinning of the hair on top of the head.

A bald patch then appears to develop at the crown of the head.

All of these receding areas eventually grow larger and merge, leaving a strip at the front that sooner or later thins out as well.

This measuring tool is known as the Norwood scale and is the most advanced way of classifying hair loss in men.

What causes male pattern baldness?

Baldness in men and women is usually genetically determined. This form of baldness is also known as androgenetic alopecia. It is caused by male hormones (androgens). Hair follicles are sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). After puberty the male hormone testosterone rises, and so does DHT. When DHT binds to the hair follicles it causes them to shrink, to grow back more slowly and eventually to fall out.

In male pattern baldness, the hair follicles at the back and sides of the head are usually not affected by the DHT hormone. Because these areas often contain healthy and abundant hair, it is possible to use these strong hairs for a hair transplant.

Hair loss is a common condition, and there are a number of causes besides genetic factors that have been linked to it. These include iron deficiency, protein deficiency, chronic illness, certain medications and even damage caused by improper hair care.
